Arcturan Sustainable Cargo
Hyperloop One, AECOM and GRID Logistics, together with consulting partner KPMG, have committed to collaborate on a privately funded economic and technical feasibility study. The study investigates using innovative advanced technologies to alleviate traffic congestion in the Los Angeles area, to improve air quality and port efficiency and positively impact the city's economic competiveness.
The study's goal is to prove the technical and commercial feasibility of a new cargo delivery system for freight offloaded from container ships at the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach, the two largest ports in the United States, to destinations throughout the Los Angeles and Inland Empire region.
It is anticipated that the deployment of new technology and process combined with the creative use of existing transportation corridors will lead to increased port productivity, stakeholder revenues, job creation along with reduced emissions and traffic.
Recent statistics show that the most congested highways have on average between 30,000-50,000 trucks per day on the road. Many of the trucks on the highways are making trips feeding and de-feeding the two major ports, where they potentially lose valuable time and income, idling while they wait to pick up their cargo. With a higher percentage of freight that moves more efficiently between the ports and intermodal distribution centers, productivity, efficiency and revenues of all stakeholders can be increased significantly.
With those goals and a bold vision in mind, the commenced feasibility study aims to assess the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach's options for:
- Engineering concepts for the hyperloop system and GRID SuperDockTM system
- Potential routes and rights of way
- Capabilities of the system to increase throughput and capacity at the ports
- Increased revenue potential for port authorities, port operators, shipping lines, trucking companies and other stakeholders from increased throughput and capacity
- Alternatives to divert traffic away from congested areas and reduce bottlenecks and the resulting traffic jams
- The contribution this potentially all-electric system with a smaller environmental footprint has towards achieving California's goals of reducing CO2, other pollutants and environmental impacts in general
- The potential level of economic growth locally and in the State of California
